Baldur, the Norse god of light and purity, was lost in Niflheim. Odin, desperate in his grief, refuses to believe that his son rests in the misty realm of the dead. Defying fate, the Allfather delves into the depths of Niflheim to advance through its hostile lands. Niflheim, however, is the realm of the dead and the living are not welcome there.
This free-to-play mode was inspired by the rogue genre and offers players a new challenge where enemies are relentless and every decision counts.
DIE AND TRY AGAIN
As with other roguelike experiences, Forgotten Saga challenges players to push their limits against tough enemies in a hostile world. Players must traverse the world in a single attempt to conquer the depths of Niflheim; death, however, is a natural part of the experience and will occur frequently in your adventures. With each kill, you return to the start with opportunities to upgrade Odin and amplify his strength to try again with a better understanding of how to overcome the challenges ahead.
The lands of Niflheim are cruel and unforgiving. Your journey will take you through many of its regions, such as the icy Kaldstad and the poisonous swamps of Nidheim, on your way to Castle Hel. Traveling through these lands is no easy task, as Hel’s minions patrol the area, ready to attack any intruder that appears. Before moving on to the next area, you must face a Champion Goddess. Each area has a unique opponent that you can only face in the Forgotten Saga expansion.
Your exploration of the world will be rewarded with useful perks, gear, and skills to take on tough groups of enemies, as well as secret areas for eagle-eyed players. While exploring the world, Odin will encounter other NPCs that offer optional side quests that cannot be completed in a single attempt.
Equipment has been completely overhauled in Forgotten Saga. Upon joining Niflheim, Odin will have none of the gear he brought with him, being forced to deal with threats from Hel’s domain with completely random weapons.
As you progress through the various attempts, your weaponry will be influenced by your own strategic choices. You can improve your chances of survival by defeating enemies, earning new weapons, outfits, and runes from world events, or spending hard-earned coins in the merchant’s shop. While Odin can use multiple runes to gain power, only one weapon can be equipped in a slot at a time. Every decision you make will need to be carefully planned, because if Hel’s Legion manages to defeat you, you will lose all of your powerful gear and return to the start.
Death will cross your path, but you need not fear it. Each time Odin is expelled from Niflheim, you will receive skill points to upgrade a new skill tree, making you stronger and increasing your chances of receiving high-powered runes and weapons.
With each attempt to pass through Niflheim, you will receive coins to upgrade Odin and purchase new perks and abilities to grow stronger. New tattoos, mounts, and raven pelts will be available in Ravensthorpe for you to purchase with coins from your playtime. those who are ready to take on the ultimate challenge and defeat not just the forces of Hel, but the Goddess herself.
