Quim Barreiros. A happy childhood, defamation and a life of great joy

O The program ‘Alta Definition’ broadcast, this Saturday, July 30, Daniel Oliveira’s interview with Quim Barreiro. A conversation that took the singer on a journey through time, reminiscing about his childhood and various moments in his career.

At 75, the artist has a life full of milestones and stories, like the afternoon he spent selling a cow at auction that brought in more than 100 thousand dollars.

From childhood, he says, he remembers good times and a lot of happiness, especially the simple ones. When her mother made porridge, she recalls, “she would shave the bottom of the pan. It would turn white.” Or when I was playing ball with cans of paint…”I had a happy childhood“.

He started working at the age of nine, with the fourth grade. At 15, when his mother died, he went back to school. It took a short time to complete the seventh year of schooling. “Then the Air Force came and my studies stopped because I started making money“. It was at this time that he launched into music and never stopped.

Still remembering his late mother, with whom he had a strong bond, he says that the “advice, love and religion“. “My mother was very religious. He taught me the way of God, which I follow in my own way. I was the son of a mother, it was she who defended me. She was very attached to me, and I to her. I think of her every day, alone“, he adds, but he does not only think of his mother. He also often remembers his stepfather, his nephew who died at 28, and other family members and friends.

About his stepfather, with whom he also had a strong bond, he confessed that he regretted not having granted his last wish.. Quim Barreiros says the woman’s father was hospitalized and asked, as a last resort, to go home and see his grandchildren. But, as he was in the hospital, “full of tubes”, he ended up not being able to do it anymore.

“I regret that I didn’t speak to the doctors, that I didn’t take an ambulance and that I didn’t bring him home. I’m sorry. I loved my stepfather very much. He lived with me longer than my father. My wife is an only child and he has always lived with me and my mother-in-law. And a bond is always created. There is a strong shock, we are missing someone there, at the table, at the snack, at the games… Everything ends”, he shares.

The singer also said that he continues to go to the cemetery to visit those who have already left. “Sometimes I go alone. I talk to them, it’s good. I feel good, I leave from there and I am another man, I even breathe better. And to some, I say see you soon, I’m also going there, by their side.“, these.

During the interview, Quim Barreiro spoke about his family and the great support they give him. “Fortunately, I found a woman who understood me. Most musicians struggle when they are married, because a musician’s life is nomadic. – today they play here, tomorrow there… The musician must love the road and the music, and he must have a family who understands him, because otherwise it is not possible “, he underlines.

Quim Barreiros is one of the most popular popular musicians in Portugal and his music is hardly unknown, especially for puns. “I don’t make the songs maliciously, to offend A, B or Che defends himself, pointing out that he only writes the themes to make people laugh.

And there are many concerts he gives every year, but it’s not extravagant when it comes to “requests”. The singer assures that he only asks for water on stage for himself and the musicians who accompany him.

“The party committee is already giving us dinner, then we go on stage… why are we going to have a dressing room loaded with bottles and food? I’m not going to a country to complicate when I’m hired, I’m going to help party committee,” he said.

And do you think about the day when you will leave the stage? Quim Barreiros confesses that when he feels he has to end the broadcasts, he will. “I think there will come a time when I won’t drag myself anymore. It’s often faster than you think. As long as I can is fine, but sometimes it just takes a little bit to stop us. I don’t think about it, but you have to count on it“, Explain.

Also during the interview, he praised the support and work of the musicians who have accompanied him for several years. “I owe a lot to my musicians“, he says.

But he also hasn’t forgotten the day he was ‘vilified’. “About 40 years ago, when I started, it came out in the papers that I was a drug capo in the north of the country,” he recalls, referring to the words being published in a Spanish magazine and then quoted by Portuguese newspapers.

“That is to say, a journalist walked on my land and someone who didn’t like me there told him that I was into drugs, because I was building there – because at the time I started making money and started building on my land. , I was defamed and it was a huge disappointment for me and my family. Then I put him in court“, remember. The singer won the case and received “compensation of 28,000 contos”.

However, he laments, “it didn’t make the headlines.” “They defame and then when it comes to erasing a man’s name, nobody cleans up“, he adds.

Asked by Daniel Oliveira if anyone owes him an apology, the artist took the opportunity to say: “I think the state owes me an apology. If I win ten thousand euros, I have to give 5,300 euros to the Minister of Finance and I only have 4,700. They don’t sing, they don’t dance, but they clean up all the money“.

Quim Barreiro is, deep down, an “embarrassed man” and “does not like being praised”, because he “is embarrassed”. And, he says, he’d rather celebrate his 50-year career atop a tractor in his village than in a Coliseum. “This is where I feel good,” he shares, not forgetting the students.
