Doctor Drauzio Varellaone of the first Brazilian oncologists, assessed that Brazil is “reacting slowly” to prevent the progression of the monkeypox virus, known as ‘monkey pox’. In an interview with Globo News this Saturday (30), the oncologist stressed the need for Ministry of Health ‘fight’ to vaccinate the population against the disease.
“We are in an epidemic outbreak and I think we are reacting, to change, slowly,” he compared the difficult start to vaccination against the Covid-19 pandemic. This Friday (29) it was confirmed first death from ‘monkey pox’ not Country.
The day before (28), the disease had been recognized as an outbreak after 1,000 confirmed cases. “All over the world, the number of cases is increasing rapidly. THE SGD [Organização Mundial da Saúde] recognizes more than 20,000 cases distributed in more than 75 countries to date, ”said the doctor.
Drauzio added that the virus “has always been around” but has not received due attention from health authorities due to a Eurocentric scientific understanding.
“The truth is that this disease has always existed in Africa. There have been outbreaks in the central part of the African continent, starting from the Congo River, where the Democratic Republic of Congo is located, the Central African Republic, in the west of the continent, and in Nigeria, especially,” he said. -he explains.
The doctor pointed out that although there are reports in these territories, they are of different severity, with a fatality rate of 1% in Nigeria and 10% in the Congo Basin.
“It’s always been there, but science has never cared, because a disease that only affects black people, nobody cares, nobody thinks it’s important for global health .It turns out that in today’s world when you have a virus that pops up in one area, it spreads around the world, there’s no way to stay contained,” he said. he analyses.
“And then it starts to bring in white people, in Europe, in the United States. Then the WHO became aware of this threat, which is a serious threat,” he added, illustrating that Brazil has already notified more than a thousand cases in just two months.
“We are in the midst of an epidemic and I think we are reacting, to change, slowly,” he stressed the importance of vaccination, which requires coordination for the acquisition of vaccines.
“The Ministry [da Saúde] must act actively to get vaccinated, the few that exist in the world. And, as we have seen for the Covid, our ministry is not very active in this area, ”he recalled.
“It is important that we have a vaccine, that the ministry fights, that the country uses all the international pressure it can to obtain vaccines against monkeypox,” he concluded.
The agency’s forecast is that the vaccinators will arrive until next September. Drauzio noted, however, that from an epidemiological perspective, immediate immunization of people close to infected people would be ideal.
