BOLA – Sporting defeats Benfica and becomes double national champion (Futsal)

Sporting beat Benfica, 4-3, in the third game of the play-off final, played on Saturday night at the Pavilhão João Rocha, in Lisbon, to become two-time national futsal champions.

After winning the first two games, both in overtime, the lions defeat the eagles again and close the championship.

At half-time the story seemed told, thanks to goals from Pauleta, Diego Cavinato and Fernando Cardinal, but the second half offered a completely different story, with the Reds betting on the turn of events to force the match 4. André Sousa reduced the disadvantage, and even Zicky Té’s goal did not destroy Benfica’s dream. The men of Pulpis still managed to find the strength to enter into the discussion of the result, with a double from Arthur leaving the marker uncertain until the end.

And at the last second (!) the draw could even have been a reality, but Arthur, after a Robinho corner, fired at the Guitta goal post.

It was the swan song for the eagles and, from then on, the João Rocha pavilion, which was full to bursting, exploded with joy to celebrate a new achievement of the lions under the command of Nuno Dias, which, in this way, becomes the coach with the most national titles: this is the seventh championship won by the current Sporting coach, who thus overtakes Orlando Duarte (6).

Beginning of the second part!

Sporting have a hand and a half on the title. The lions will rest by winning by 3-0, the result of an extremely competent first half and which even had moments of great brilliance.

Pauleta, after 5 minutes, opened the scoring, following an assist from Erick Mendonça, and Diego Cavinato, in the 13th minute, and after a touch from Alex Merlim, increased the lead.

Benfica could have reduced it in the 17th minute, but Arthur, in the transformation from a free kick from 10 meters (sixth foul committed by Sporting), fired the right post from the goal of Gonçalo Portugal, called in to try to defend the dead ball.

They didn’t mark the eagles… they still marked the lions. As half-time approached, and after Pauleta’s excellent work on the right, Fernando Cardinal, at the entrance to the area, released the ball and gave Nuno Dias’ men even more advantage.
