Scientific advances in immunomodulatory treatments have completely changed the perspective of people with rheumatic diseases. Until then, when a person received a diagnosis of rheumatism, he already knew that his life was going to change forever, because the absence of effective drugs “doomed” him to a daily life of deprivation and sequelae.

These and other topics will be discussed in BiH, at the XIII Minas Gerais Conference on Rheumatology, which will take place on the 24th and 25th of this month. The objective is to present treatments that offer a normal life to the patient with rheumatism, with regard to work, family and sport, among other actions, focusing on the control of the disease.

According to the president of the entity, Mariana Peixoto, the theme of this issue is “Rheumatology and the future”, covering the news of medicines and the progress of studies to treat the more than 120 pathologies that are part of this group .

The therapeutic evolution contributes to the fact that a growing part of the 12 million Brazilians affected by one of these pathologies, according to the Ministry of Health, can lead a normal and pain-free life, minimizing the risk of physical incapacity.

Mariana explains that there is a genetic predisposition to these diseases, but the cause has not yet been identified. Certain viruses and bacteria can cause an imbalance in the immune system and be the trigger. “New drugs targeting different therapeutic targets, such as JAK inhibitors, interleukin blockers, complement cascade modulators, among others, can treat rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, lupus , vasculitis and osteoporosis with high efficacy and fewer side effects,” he explains.

The main treatments available are immunobiological. The change is the new biological components, living molecules created by genetic engineering from micro-organisms, but with a constitution increasingly close to the human molecule, making it possible to treat pathologies over the long term with less effort. impact for the patient.

Immunotherapy is the treatment of disease by inducing control of the immune response. An immunomodulator makes adjustments to some aspect of the immune system, increasing or decreasing a specific cytokine or cell behavior. The activity and efficiency of this system can be influenced by exogenous and endogenous factors, leading to immunosuppression or immunostimulation.

Already, immunosuppression is a reduction in the activation or effectiveness of the immune system, that is, a type of treatment that reduces the stimulus of the immune system to attack healthy cells. All drugs, immunomodulators and immunosuppressants, are available options, the indication depending on the type of disease, manifestation and patient profile.
