“I swear you’ll never see anything like this again” [Juro que nunca mais verão algo assim]. The words used by Martin Tyler to to tell about Sergio Agüero’s goal against QPR in 2012 seemed fitting for a heartbreaking final day of the 2011/12 Premier League, full of emotions, with Manchester City pulling off a last-minute comeback that secured the English league title.
But we have seen something similar again.
Manchester City won the Premier League, after a 38 day roller coaster of events and goals traveled between Manchester and Liverpool, in a final worthy of the stratospheric level that reached the rivalry led by the football machines of Pep Guardiola and Jürgen .Klopp Tu townspeople led 2-0 against Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa in the last fifteen minutes, but three goals in five minutes destroyed the hopes of Liverpool, who, also with goals close to the back of the curtain, beat Bruno’s Wolverhampton Lage 3-1.
It’s City’s second title and Guardiola’s fourth Premier League victory in the past five seasons – in total there are six titles for the Manchester club since, in 2008, Abu Dhabi money won revolutionized a team which, until then, had only been champions twice, the last in 1968.
As the top two moved one point closer to the final round, the emotions that presaged the decisive afternoon did not disappoint. After just 3 minutes, Bruno Lage’s Wolverhampton made it 1-0, with Raúl Jiménez taking advantage of a decisive error to assist Pedro Neto.
Wolves’ goal was celebrated at the Etihad as if City had scored, but nervousness quickly got the better of Guardiola’s men. With a lot of inaccuracies and precipitation, Gerrard’s Aston Villa took the opportunity to take the lead in the 37′, through Cash. News of the draw had already arrived from Anfield, via Mané, so at half-time the picture was simple: a Reds goal would give them the title, with Gerrard decisive for a triumph that, as captain, he never managed to secure at the club of his loves.
The second half began with City less and less able to control their emotions. Guardiola was throwing Zinchenko, Sterling or Gündoğan, but he was another former Liverpool reference to score. At 69′, Coutinho made it 2-0, another much-celebrated goal at Anfield. On the faces of Etihad looked like pronouns of defeat.
But the spirit of Agüero in 2012 is reborn in Gündoğan in 2022, as if Manchester City’s epic heroes must have idiosyncrasies in the accentuation of their names.
In an outburst of anger, football and belief, Manchester City scored three times in five minutes. At 76′, İlkay Gündoğan revives hope with a fine header; at 78′, Rodri plays against Dzeko and scores 2-2; at 81′, Gündoğan once again took advantage of his time in the finish area to drive the Etihad stands crazy.
Goals from Salah and Robertson ultimately came to nothing for Liverpool. The title would travel, once again, to Manchester, ending the dream of quadruple: after winning the League Cup and the FA Cup, Liverpool will now play in the Champions League final on the 28th in Paris against Real Madrid.
In Manchester, the final whistle signaled the start of the expected invasion of the pitch, with fans taking possession of the pitch.
It’s the 10th major league title Pep Guardiola has won – he also won Spain’s Third Division with Barca B. With four Premier League titles in the last five seasons, there’s no doubting the hegemony of the league is located in England.
Martin Tyler may not believe it, but 10 years later another Premier League result has been decided in the photo finish. Once again it was Manchester City who crossed the line first, packed with İlkay Gündoğan’s game of life.
